THE 1994 squad of the Super Eagles of Nigeria received Certificates of Occupancy (C of Os) of three-bedroom bungalows yesterday at the capital city of Nigeria, Abuja.
Nigeria won its second Championship in 1994, it was the 19th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, hosted by Tunisia. Super Eagles defeated Zambia by 2-1 in the final.
President Buhari, last year, approved the allocation of 3-bedroom houses to the Super Eagles Squad that won the African Cup of Nations, making real a promise by the Federal Government.
Minister of works and housing, Babatunde Fashola in an event yesterday, mentioned that his counterpart at the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Sunday Dare played a vital role in them fulfilling the promise.
The former Governor of Lagos state, explained that because it would be almost impossible to give the entire team and some crew members houses in Abuja, it was decided that the beneficiaries will pick a state of their choice where they wanted their buildings.
“This promise is late enough and we want to ensure that it does not delay any further,” the minister stated, adding that once the beneficiaries get to the site, the keys to their houses will be handed over to them.
Some of the beneficiaries who were presented the documents at the ministry included: Austin Eguavoen; Peter Rufai; Victor Ikpeba; Sunday Oliseh; Isaac Semitoje; Col. A. Asielue (team leader); Stephen Edema and Uche Okafor (now deceased).
The Super Eagles erstwhile coach used the opportunity to apologise to Nigerians for not qualifying the team for the Mundial event in Qatar later this year.
“As you all know, I was saddled with the responsibility of qualifying Nigeria for the World Cup tournament coming up in Qatar, but it wasn’t to be. So I want to use this opportunity to apologise to the entire Nigerians,” he said.■
