This research shows that sleep deprivation can cause a number of serious, and potentially life-threatening, health problems.

1. Alzheimer’s

In a 2013 study conducted by John’s Hopkins University (JHU), researchers concluded that poor sleep habits can be a cause of Alzheimer’s Disease (ALS). Furthermore, this same study concluded that lack of sleep can expedite progression of the disease.

The study was initiated by previous research, which posited that sleep was essential to the elimination of waste-like buildup that accumulated in the brain called “cerebral waste.”

The 70 research subjects involved in the JHU study were between the ages of 53 and 91. Subjects that continuously reported poor sleep showed a disproportionate amount of beta-amyloid in areas of their brain. Beta-amyloid is a compound substance that has been directly linked as a definitive indicator of ALS.

2. Prostate Cancer

In a study consisting of 2,425 Icelandic men between the ages of 67 and 96, researchers discovered that men with sleep problems were 60 percent more likely to develop prostate cancer.

Shockingly, this number increased two-fold when participants reported difficulty staying asleep. Furthermore, researchers discovered that sleep deprived males were more susceptible to the cancer advancing to the late stages.

Scientists attribute the correlation between cancer and sleep deprivation to low levels of melatonin. Melatonin is an important chemical for suppressing tumor growth. When this chemical is too low – as it is with people who are sleep deprived – it becomes possible to accelerate cancerous growths.

3. Cardiovascular Disease

In simple terms, poor sleep is absolutely terrible for heart health. Poor sleep has been linked to cardiovascular disease for years; however, it wasn’t until just recently that scientists discovered a stronger correlation than before. In a 14-year study of 657 Russian men, two-thirds of those that experienced a heart attack also had a sleep disorder.

Additionally, subjects reporting a sleep disorder were 2.6 times more likely to develop a myocardial infraction, and 1.5 to 4 times more likely to experience a stroke.

4. Obesity and Diabetes

Loads of research had already concluded that a link existed between diabetes and poor sleep habits. However, a University of Chicago study further extended this link to include potential obesity – a condition known to precede diabetes.

Researchers discovered that little sleep can exacerbate the accumulation of fatty acid levels within the blood, which can negatively alter how the body regulates blood sugar.

In the study of 19 men, researchers discovered that those who slept only four hours over a three night span had higher levels of fatty acid within the blood – up to a 30 percent increase over subjects who received 8 hours of sleep.

5. Suicidal thoughts and/or Suicide

This one is both surprising and extremely disturbing. In a 2014 study conducted at the Stanford University School of Medicine, researchers found a correlation between lack of sleep and incidence of suicide.

During the 10-year study, 20 of the 420 participants that committed suicide reported having suffered from poor sleep. Ultimately, researchers concluded that individuals that suffer from lack of sleep are 1.4 times more likely to end their lives. Additionally, this risk increases with a combination of advanced age and stress levels.

What is the thyroid?

Our thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped organ at the base of the neck, is responsible for releasing hormones that help to regulate our metabolism. Other vital functions the thyroid influences include:

  • Cholesterol levels
  • Heart rate
  • Menstrual cycles
  • Muscle strength

Lying near the front of the throat and beneath the Adam’s apple, the thyroid comprises two sides called lobes. These lobes are connected by a strip of tissues called the isthmus.

How does the thyroid gland work?

The thyroid is a constituent of the endocrine system – a collection of glands responsible for producing, storing, and releasing hormones into the bloodstream. The thyroid gland uses iodine from the foods we eat to manufacture two critical hormones, ‘T3′ and ‘T4′.  (‘T3’ hormone is short for the hormone Triiodothyronine; ‘T4’ for Thyroxine.)

Thyroid hormone production is regulated via a feedback loop between the thyroid gland, hypothalamus, and pituitary gland – two deeply entrenched, tiny areas of the brain.

The production of T3 and T4 hormones is a complex process. And as with anything complex, it’s not uncommon for thyroid problems to surface.

Signs of Thyroid Troubles

It’s estimated that as many as 25 million Americans have a thyroid issue. Of this 25 million, roughly half (12.5 million) don’t realize it. Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, accounts for 90% of all thyroid conditions.

Here are seven of the most common symptoms of hypothyroidism:

1. Fatigue

Our body’s energy production requires a certain amount of thyroid hormones. A significant drop off in this production leads to diminished energy levels, producing a strong sense of fatigue and weakness.

2. Weight gain

A shortage of thyroid hormones slows the body’s metabolic rate. When this happens, we don’t digest as many foods and fewer calories are converted into energy. For many thyroid patients, a lack of treatment – or insufficient treatment – makes weight loss nearly impossible, even with proper diet and exercise.

3. Recurring sickness

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease, is the most common type of hypothyroidism. As we all know, a suppressed immune system makes it much more difficult to ward off harmful viruses and bacteria; this results in more frequent illness. Most worrisome is that Hashimoto’s causes the immune system to attack otherwise healthy organs and tissues.

4. Loss of coordination

Hypothyroidism that goes untreated can damage the peripheral nerves. These nerves relay information from the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body, including our arms and legs. Damage to these nerves may cause numbness, pain, and tingling in the affected area(s).

5. Brain fog

Our brain houses a particular type of immune cell called microglia. 10-15% of all brain cells are microglia, which are responsible for stimulating the body’s immune defense within the central nervous system (CNS). Brain fog is directly attributable to brain inflammation – a byproduct of irritated microglia cells. Forgetfulness, inability to concentrate and diminished cognitive ability are all telltale signs of brain fog.

6. Anxiety or depression

The brain is susceptible to inflammation. Besides experiencing a general loss of mental acuity (“brain fog”), our neurochemicals, i.e., neurotransmitters, are thrown out of whack. Being the smarties that you all are, you quickly grasp the importance of thyroid health. But the truth is that many people downplay the importance of a healthy thyroid gland. Some are utterly unaware of what the thyroid is and what it does.

Here’s one case in point for why thyroid health is critical:

Myxedema, an advanced form of hypothyroidism is rare, but when it occurs, it can be life-threatening.

Signs and symptoms include low blood pressure, decreased breathing, decreased body temperature, unresponsiveness and even coma. In extreme cases, myxedema can be fatal.

How to Naturally Detox Your Lungs

OF all organs, the lungs are arguably the most abused and ignored. Whatever happens to be in the air when we breathe is instantly deposited into the lungs. You’ve already seen the ubiquitous ads warning against smoking. When is the last time you saw something on television about air pollutants? Greenhouse gases? The dangers of burning coal?

Let’s use coal as an (obvious) example. Despite the recent pontification regarding the innocence of coal-burning, it is “the (United States) top source of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, the primary cause of global warming …a leading cause of smog, acid rain, and toxic air pollution.”

“Our lungs interact with the environment,” explains Dr. Lisa A. Maier, head of the National Jewish Health’s environmental and occupational health sciences in Denver, Colorado. “We literally breath in everything that’s around us.”

While nearly every other developed country in the world is enacting safeguards against air pollutants, the U.S. has undone over 20 environmental rules over the past year, endangering its citizen’s health and well-being.

As bad as this situation is, many places in the world have it much worse, where few to no environmental regulations or safeguards exist. India, for example, is a fast-developing nation with one of the worst environmental records of any country. As Radhika Joshi eloquently states in a piece titled, ‘Ignore environmental protection at your own peril,’

“Said to be at the top of the development chain, humans have become the embodiment of destruction of nature. The lap of nature in which evolution takes place is deteriorating due to the greed of humanity.”

If we can’t rely on elected officials to hold themselves accountable on such an important issue, we must take control of the controllable – we must preserve our health.

The nuances of preventative medicine are beyond the scope of this article. However, simple and effective ways say, to protect your lungs, are not. We will focus on the latter.

How to Naturally Detox Your Lungs

1. Quit Smoking

The obvious of all obvious solutions for protecting the lungs is to refrain from smoking. Per the American Cancer Society (ACS), smoking is by far the leading cause of lung cancer – accounting for about 80 to 85 percent of lung cancer deaths.

Per the ACS, while “smoking is clearly the strongest risk factor for lung cancer,” the habit “often interacts with other known risk factors…” The clearest link, unsurprisingly, is genetics.

It’s also worth nothing, per the National Health Service (UK), that “non-smoking women who share their house with a smoking partner are 25 percent more likely to develop lung cancer that non-smoking women (with) a non-smoking partner.”

2. Get your antioxidants

A healthy and well-balanced diet that includes plenty of antioxidants is an excellent way to detox the lungs (and other organs.) Antioxidants ward off harmful free radicals that harm healthy cells. Research shows that antioxidants “enhance lung capability and improve the quality of breathing”  in clinical settings.

Good sources of antioxidants include blueberries, broccoli, fish, grapes, green tea, spinach, and sweet potatoes.

3. Break a sweat

Once again, researchers prove the extraordinary benefits of exercise. A half-hour, three to four times per week, or 20 minutes of high-intensity interval training three times weekly is enough to keep your lungs pumping along.

4. Consider your environment

Whatever potential environment(s) you’re able to control, you can and should. First, ensure that your home and workplace and well-ventilated. Second, if your occupation involves the handling of hazardous materials (e.g., construction workers, painters, assembly line workers, etc.) wear a personal respirator or dust mask. (On the off-chance that your employer or customer objects, explain your rationale. If they’re unaccommodating, you have legal ramifications. Do NOT put your health at risk.)

If you know that your state/city/town/village is a toxic environment, consider moving. Is this a drastic step? Not really, if you consider the health implications of staying put.

5. Learn how to breathe

On the surface, this last one (admittedly) may sound a bit crazy…just hear us out.

Most people do not know how to breathe. Don’t believe us? Observe how you’re breathing now. (By the way, this writer is as guilty as most of you.)

The problem: we have a tendency to take shallow breaths. The solution: the lungs are an expandable organ. Understand this physiology and practice deep breathing a few times per week. You’ll expand your lungs, reduce stress, and feel more energetic.

Type 1

With Type 1, your immune system will attack the beta cells in your pancreas that produce insulin. Your body can partially or permanently lose its ability to create the insulin it requires.

Type 2

Medical science categorizes type 2 as a metabolic syndrome. Your genetics and lifestyle can be two major factors. Age is not considered despite the common onset being over 40 years old; children can have type 2 too.

High blood sugar causes the syndrome, and your cells become resistant to the insulin you create. While your body will create more over time, your resistance grows.

Prediabetes

When you hear the news speak about the diabetes epidemic, they’re mostly referring to what doctors call prediabetes. This means you have many markers or some early symptoms for it, but your blood sugar isn’t quite in the range for a diabetic diagnosis.

The Mayo Clinic says you can expect a type 2 diagnosis within 10 years unless you make lifestyle changes.

Who’s at Risk?

Doctors generally only assess the risk for type 2 and pre diabetes. Type 1 isn’t measurable since researchers don’t fully understand how or why the body triggers it.

Both types share a link with genetics. However, just because a family member is diabetic doesn’t mean you will become diabetic. This is especially true with type 2 where your diet and lifestyle play a major role.

Obesity factors, such as waist circumference, can increase your risk for developing type 2 or diabetes. However, 15% of people with type 2 are normal weight, so your number on the scale alone matters less.

Why Cancer Is Often a Death Sentence in Africa

THE number of cancer cases is notably on the rise in sub-Saharan Africa. But medical professionals say there is not enough awareness, facilities, or political will to change the situation.

Lilian Gasper is an oncologist at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi, located just south of the eponymous mount in Tanzania. The consultant says she sees more patients these days than in previous years.

“However, few patients really know about cancer,” she told DW. This is why she also visits surrounding villages in the hope of educating more people about the symptoms of various cancers, helping them to detect disease early.

“We show women techniques to scan their breasts and offer consultations in our mobile clinics,” she says. “We offer imaging solutions for [detecting] breast cancer and also offer vaccinations for young girls against cervical cancer.”

But an overall lack of knowledge among the population isn’t the only challenge cancer specialists face in many parts of the continent. Above all, there’s a shortage of medical equipment.

German physician Oliver Henke — who helped set up the new cancer ward at KCMC Hospital in Moshi in 2016 — says finding a cancer specialist anywhere in Africa can be difficult.

“If we exclude the North African countries and South Africa, the rest of the [African] countries suffer from an overall sense of poor coverage in terms of specialists and staff,” he told DW.

Only 20 cancer specialists for an entire country

In Tanzania — a country with a population of over 60 million — fewer than 20 doctors are specializing in cancer care, says Henke. In addition, only three hospitals offer cancer therapies, and only two of those three have the equipment for radiation therapy. In Moshi, for example, there are plans to open a radiation center in the future — but there still isn’t enough money to do so.

The clinics that do offer treatments are often overbooked, Henke adds. As a result, many cancer patients have to travel for a couple of days to receive treatment.

On top of everything else, cancer treatment in Tanzania is far from being a free service.

“Only 8% of Tanzanians have adequate health insurance that covers cancer,” Henke says. “The others have to pay out of their own pockets, collect donations or try to participate in free aid programs.”

This is part of why most cancer patients seek out traditional healers first — not realizing that they cannot cure cancer.

More routine cancer examinations needed

By the time they overcome all of these obstacles and see a specialist, it’s already too late for many people. Gaspar explains that “many patients only come when they are already showing symptoms due to the lack of routine examinations,” which can be fatal.

Henke also confirms that about 80% of patients only come to seek help when the cancer is no longer curable.

But there is also another issue at stake that may contribute to higher death rates across Africa: Genetics. Henke says evidence suggests that “prostate cancers appear earlier in African men and are generally much more aggressive.”

More aggressive forms of breast cancer are also more common in African women than German women. According to Henke, these differences are “very likely genetic.”

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) projects that cancer cases worldwide will nearly double between 2018 and 2040. Factors behind this forecast, include the growth in the global population and the steady increase in life expectancy around the globe.

A team of scientists — most of whom work at the Pasteur Institute in Tunisia — conducted a study on cancer trends on the African continent. Their research, published in 2021, revealed that growing affluence across Africa is also a risk factor for cancer.

Lifestyles are shifting alongside changing disposable income levels, with “urbanization, various forms of pollution, more tobacco and alcohol consumption, and diets high in meat, sugar and processed foods” all contributing to an increased risk.

The biggest killer: Cervical cancer

Oncologist Henke says that an estimated 30% of all cancer cases in sub-Saharan Africa are caused or exacerbated by infections. Above all, this includes cervical cancer, which is usually the result of a long-term Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection.

Gasper says that the risk factors for transmitting the virus include having sex without barrier protection (usually a condom) or having multiple sexual partners. Unfortunately, many people don’t realize the magnitude of these risks, partly because the narrative on sexually transmitted diseases in Africa has focused solely on HIV/AIDS for decades.

According to The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) project, cervical cancer caused the highest number of deaths in more than half of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa in 2018. And the study from Tunisia confirms that there is a high mortality rate for cervical cancer in Africa: In 2018, more than 75% of all affected women in East, Central, and West Africa did not survive.

The mortality rate declined in southern Africa in recent years, while it has increased in all other African regions over the past four years. Although vaccinations against this type of cancer are available, Gasper says that vaccine skepticism is high based on her experience in Tanzania.

South Africa’s battle against lung cancer

The study from Tunisia also highlights that lung cancer is on the rise in northern and southern Africa. In South Africa, this type of cancer caused the most deaths in 2018, according to TCGA.

Lorraine Govender, a health promotion manager at CANSA, South Africa’s oldest non-governmental organization working to help eradicate cancer, is concerned about the lack of official screening programs against lung cancer in her country.

Although South Africa is considered a middle-and upper-income nation, Govender says there are still massive inequalities in cancer treatment. Currently, only private health insurance is available in South Africa, which offers varying degrees of services and protections.

This means that the quality of care is low, especially in rural areas, as there is a lack of personnel. “Most oncologists work in private clinics,” Govender told DW.

Politics over people

Meanwhile, the potential introduction of national health insurance in the country remains a highly debated issue in a country where poor service delivery has disillusioned much of the population, with few trusting the government to run any public program.

But any progress towards making healthcare accessible to everyone has effectively been halted, as other political issues and scandals take center stage. This puts lower-income demographics at a major disadvantage when they fall ill.

Nearly 44,000 people protest in Austria after government mandates Covid vaccine

<SUNBIGHT> – Nearly 44,000 people gathered in Austria’s Vienna to protest against mandatory Covid vaccines. Europe is currently seeing a surge in infections amid concerns of the new Covid variant, Omicron. 

Protestors were seen holding placards that read, “No to vaccine fascism,” “I’m not a neo-Nazi or a hooligan,” and, “I’m fighting for freedom and against the vaccine,” states AFP.

Nearly 68 per cent of the country’s population is fully vaccinated. This accounts for one of the lowest rates in Western Europe.

The government in Austria has stated that those who have not received the required vaccine dose will need to stay at home as it makes the vaccine mandatory from February for all residents older than 14.

As per the government, nobody will be vaccinated forcefully. However, those who have not received the jab will need to pay an initial fine of $670. This can further go upto $4,000, if not settled.

According to a tally by the Johns Hopkins University, Austria has confirmed 1.2 million infections with nearly 13,000 fatalities since the start of the pandemic.

This comes a few days after a Reuters tally stated that Europe has surpassed 75 million coronavirus cases. The European

Union’s public health agency has warned that within a few months, the new Covid variant could be responsible for more than half of all the cases. 

Before Omicron was even discovered, Europe had become the epicentre of the pandemic, for the second time. 

The WHO had warned that 700,000 more people could die from coronavirus by March 2022, taking the total to above 2.2 million. WHO had said that it is expected that there will be high or extreme stress on hospital beds in 25 countries.■

AN international business man and Chairman/CEO, JEEKADOOR NIG. LTD, popularly known as “Jekwu” slumped and died in his company head office located at Kano Street, Main Market Onitsha, Anambra state.

Report exclusive to SUNBIGHT MEDIA confirmed the sad event happened while he was having his lunch on 30th September 2021. His wife was present in his  office and called for emergency medical services.

He was confirmed dead  by doctors on arrival at the hospital.

The late multimillionaire is a son of Ogbo in Aguata local government area, Anambra State.
