THIS is purposely to inform my esteemed readers that IPOB and MASSOB are pro-Biafran groups but are not exclusive in seeking the right to self-determination of the people of Biafra.

I want to inform every foreign embassies, emissaries, high commissions and diplomatic posts that the people of Biafra are not restricted to members of IPOB and MASSOB but these are Indigenous peoples domiciled in the old eastern region of Nigeria and suffered greatly a genocide between 1967-70.

This is specifically to appeal to the British High Commission in Nigeria on its decision to exclude Indigenous Biafrans from all asylum and human rights claims made in the UK.

As much as its decision is for those persons affiliated with IPOB and MASSOB,  efforts must be made not to enforce the commission’s decision to non-members of these pro-Biafran groups.

Though it must be noted that the proscription of IPOB by the Nigerian government has an ongoing law suit filed by attorneys of the directorates of IPOB for the de-proscription of the pro-Biafran group as a terrorist sect.

I beg to question, on what ground is MASSOB also included in the exclusion for asylum in the UK?

The UK government must understand that Indigenous Biafrans are been targeted with  violence including killings by the Nigerian security forces for seeking the right to self-determination as recognized by international laws and instruments.

Indigenous peoples rights are collective rights. In essence, they are vested in Indigenous individuals that organise themselves as peoples.

The international community clearly affirms that Indigenous people require recognition of their collective rights as peoples to enable them to enjoy human rights.

Also, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples articulates in its Article 1 & 2 that Indigenous peoples and individuals are: free and equal to all peoples and individuals and have the right to be free from any kind of discrimination in the exercise of their rights, in particular that based on their indigenous origin and identity.

The British High Commission should understand that the right to self-determination in Nigeria is grossly abused by the Muhammadu Buhari led government as he openly disclosed in a press interview with Martin Dennise of Aljazeera in March 2016 in which he blatantly refused to watch the video clip of the shooting and killing of peaceful IPOB demonstrators which occurred in Aba, Abia State.

The UK government must accord to Indigenous Biafrans the same respect and human rights protection as accorded the people of Scotland seeking the same right to self-determination.■

UNDP unveils immediate, long-term plans to rebuild war-ravaged Ukraine

<SUNBIGHT>~Europe~Eke~15th April,2022 @ 18:37 WAT~PeoplesGazette

THE UN Development Programme on Monday launched a plan to provide immediate economic help and longer-term assistance to millions of struggling Ukrainians left without basic needs in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“The war in Ukraine continues to inflict immense human suffering…with nine out of 10 people at risk of falling into poverty.

“As part of a coordinated UN response, UNDP has an unwavering commitment to stay and deliver for the people of Ukraine,” Achim Steiner, UNDP Administrator, said.

The plan aims to counter the devastation that has been caused by the shelling of cities and early projections that two decades of economic progress could be lost if the war continues.

Mr Steiner insisted that it was vital to ensure that local economies continued to function and that people’s livelihoods were protected.

The announcement came as the World Bank issued an alert that Ukraine’s economy is set to shrink by 45 per cent in 2022 because of the war.

The World Bank also noted that, hit by unprecedented sanctions, Russia’s economy has already plunged into a deep recession with output projected to contract by 11.2 per cent in 2022.

To help empower women and girls, UNDP insists that they must have fair access to basic needs and livelihood support – including business support and access to finance, networks and markets.

Outside Ukraine, the impact of the Russian invasion has already translated to serious concerns among humanitarians about global food insecurity, as production in Ukraine of many cereals and other staples has been hit.

Sanctions on Moscow have also hit economies around the globe, according to World Bank, which said that emerging markets and developing countries in Europe and Central Asia were expected to “bear the brunt”.■

The Fear of the Ishi-Agu And The Gross Abuse of the Rights of Nnamdi Kanu

<SUNBIGHT>~Opinion~Afor~20th February,2022 @ 12:34 WAT

Author: Ikenga Onyekachi

WHAT is the Ishi-Agu?

Ishi-Agu is a popular traditional attire originated from the old eastern region imprinted with the face of a roaring lion or leopard.

I am not about to become a fashion analyst or a designer but my point of writing is the fear of Nigerian Department of State Security (DSS) and Judge Binta Nyako by denying the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, from choosing his own clothing in which to appear for his trial.

The defence counsel, had reported to the trial judge that the DSS rejected the clothing brought for Kanu by his brother thereby going against the court order for a change of clothing for his client.

The trial Judge Binta Nyako, seeking the response of the DSS representative was told that the clothing brought for Kanu was engraved with the face of a lion which the DSS described as intimidating and provocative.

Then, the trial judge demanded from Kanu what kind of clothing he prefers, the IPOB leader replied he prefers the traditional attire which is the Ishi-Agu.

Unbelievable, Judge Binta Nyako rejected his choice of Ishi-Agu and told the defence counsel to provide plain clothing for his client. She even claimed she has the Ishi-Agu attire but will not allow Kanu wear such to her courtroom.

Judge Binta Nyako quickly forgot that two of the former co-defendant of Nnamdi Kanu, Bright Chimezie and Benjamin Maduagwu appeared in her courtroom on February 2nd wearing the Ishi-Agu attire.

There are no fair reasons to deny Nnamdi Kanu his choice of clothing as long as it is decent but decision of the trial judge shows disdain for the people of old eastern region as always portrayed by the Nigerian government.

The Nigerian government has changed the right to self-determination to treasonable felony to justify the trial of Nnamdi Kanu and other Biafran prisoners of conscience.

The administration of Muhammadu Buhari in all efforts to imprison the IPOB leader has contravened its own constitution, including  international charters and conventions.

Till date, the Nigerian government has failed to explain the abduction of Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya. Rather the Kenyan government has publicly stated that Kanu was never subjected to any extradition or even deportation as official record showed he was legally admitted into the country.

The Nigerian government contravened its own constitution which provided in its fundamental rights at Section 35(1) that ‘No person shall be deprived of his liberty save in accordance with a procedure permitted by law.’

This simply means that since Kanu was never legally extradited it implies his personal liberty has been grossly abused and not in accordance with the law.

Notably, the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights which Nigeria is a signatory and bounded affirmed in Article 6 that “No one may be deprived of his freedom except for reasons and conditions previously laid down by law. In particular, no one may be arbitrarily arrested or detained.”

Therefore, the Nigeria government needs to explain if Nnamdi Kanu was arrested in accordance with law of Kenya or he was kidnapped and brought to Nigeria.

The same African Charter clearly stated in its Principles and Guidelines on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Part 5(A) as thus: “A state may not transfer ,(e.g deport, expel, remove, extradite) an individual to the custody of another state unless it is prescribed by law and in accordance with due process and other international human rights obligations. Deportation, expulsion, and removal cannot be used to circumvent criminal  justice processes, including extradition procedures. Extra-ordinary renditions, or any other transfer without due process is prohibited.”

The Nigerian government is by treaty bounded by this law but failed woefully in abiding bumy it.

The administration of Muhammadu Buhari in collaboration with the political jobbers of Igbo origin can continue to play games with the trial of Nnamdi Kanu but they must understand that the IPOB leader is not the Sovereign State of Biafra.

With or without Nnamdi Kanu, the struggle continues until victory is assured.

My friendly advice to them is to prepare for the next phase in which the clamour for self-determination for Biafrans shall occur and may become too violent and incomparable with the recent actions of unknown gunmen.

It is obvious the youths have become more daring and volatile.■

Mauritius Reclaims Territory From British Invaders, Hoist Flag in Chagos

<SUNBIGHT>~Mauritius~Orie~19th February,2022 @ 20:26 WAT

MAURITIUS’ flag has been mounted on the British-invaded Chagos Islands.

Britain claimed they bought the Chagos Islands for only $4 million in 1965, and thereafter displaced over 1,000 people.

In 2021, the UN court ruled that UK has no sovereignty over the islands.

It’s now confirmed that the flag of Mauritius soars in the beautiful skies of Chagos Island.
The Chagosians visited their homeland after many years of banishment by the British imperialist.

AFRICAN REPORT FILES gathered that Britain forced Mauritius to gave up Chagos Island in exchange for independence in the 1960s — they exiled Chagosians and leased the Island to the U.S to use as military base.■

The Ignorance of the Politicians of Biafran Stock

<SUNBIGHT>~Opinion~Orie~19th February,2022 @11:00 WAT

Author: Ikenga Onyekachi

TO my understanding, the core fear of the political elites of Biafran origin in relation to the agitation for the Sovereign State of Biafra, specifically those serving in the government of Nigeria is the fear of been left out of the administration of an independent Biafra.

I could understand that fear but that kind of thoughts reveals the quest for their personal gain and affluence.

Most of these politicians are aware that they have taken more of their time in politics to enrich themselves rather than develop the society and people whom they claim to be serving.

These politicians have pretentiously claimed ignorance of the issues that brought about the quest for the restoration of the sovereign state of Biafra.
But at the same time these politicians are urging for the agitators to shield their sword.

I beg to ask, how can they be able to solve or address the agitation for Biafra when they cannot publicly state the grievances that has inflamed the desire of the people of old eastern Nigeria to have their own independent nation?

The Biafra Genocide of 1967-70 marks fifty-two years and the fact checked that most of these politicians were victims or infants during that time and should have done more to avert the grievances for independence but clearly they prefer to engage in enriching themselves and obey the bidding of the Fulani controlled government of Nigeria.

It is a huge failure that for over two decades that the agitation for Biafra gained momentum beginning from Ralph Uwazuruike of MASSOB, these politicians have taken for granted the desire of the people, preferring to engage in bribery, violence and even death against the freedom fighters.

These politicians must take responsibility for their failure and accept the truth that majority of Biafrans are no longer comfortable with the forced union created by British-born Frederick Lugard and named ‘Nigeria’ by his girlfriend Flora Shaw.

The political class must come to the realization that the sovereign state of Biafra is now in a defensive state of securing her people, borders and territories.

I want to inform these politicians that the military wing for the restoration of Biafra which is the Biafran National Guard-BNG has re-declared the sovereignty of Biafra and re-hoisted the flag of independence on the 30th of October, 2021.

It is a little too late for the politicians to cry foul of not been carried along by the Biafran freedom fighters.

If these politicians had chosen wisdom and not selfishness, they would have engage in the development of infrastructures and people of the old eastern region of Nigeria.

The refineries, seaports, roads, schools, etc should have been developed to international standard and not left to rot away.

It is grievous that the Apapa-Lagos Seaport is congested while the Onne, Warri and Calabar Seaports are in a comatose state even with the high rate of unemployment of youths.
More saddening is the construction of a drydock in Kaduna-northern Nigeria to cushion the effects of the Apapa Seaport congestion.

It is cruel that crude oil is explored in the coastal region of Biafra and then exported abroad for refinement while the nearby Port Harcourt and Warri refineries is deteriorated and grounded. The indigenes are left with the pollution and degradation of their lands and waters.

Meanwhile, underground pipelines are channelled from the coastal region of Biafra transporting crude oil to northern Nigeria and neighbouring Niger Republic.

These politician are myopic and lacks courage to raise a bill to enforce the teaching of History which was scrapped from the educational curriculum by the Fulani-controlled government of Nigeria.
They prefer to engage in discussions relating to open cattle grazing and constituency funds.

It is unforgivable that the road networks in the old eastern region is the worst of its kind in Nigeria even as the region is responsible for the enrichment of the ‘British colony’.

The politicians are ignorant of the poor state of the hospitals, schools and other social amenities because they prefer to patronise those located abroad.

I could write a book about the failure of these politicians but I will rather profer solutions.

Therefore, I humbly advise the politicians of Biafran origin to wake up to the reality and understand the desire of the peoples of Biafra for self-determination and self-defence, which are natural rights recognised by international laws and instruments.

The rights to self-determination and self-defence are universal rights which cannot be denied the peoples of Biafra.

Are these politician dumb and blind to understand that President Muhammadu Buhari has consistently advocated and expressed his support to the people of Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic seeking autonomy of its territories from Morroco?

I implore these politicians to engage with the Biafran Armed forces for the self-defence of their people, borders and territories from the marauding jihad foot soldiers that have infiltrated the Nigeria armed forces and Aso Rock.

Russia does not give ‘s***’ about Western sanctions, says its ambassador to Sweden

<SUNBIGHT>~Europe~Eke~14th February,2022 @ 17:06 WAT

RUSSIA’S outspoken ambassador to Sweden Viktor Tatarintsev told a Swedish newspaper that Moscow “doesn’t give a s***’ about threat of Western sanctions over Ukraine crisis.

“Excuse my language, but we don’t give a s*** about all their sanctions”, Viktor Tatarintsev told the Aftonbladet newspaper in an interview posted on its website late Saturday.

“We have already had so many sanctions and in that sense they’ve had a positive effect on our economy and agriculture,” said the veteran diplomat, who speaks fluent Swedish and has been posted to the Scandinavian country four times.

“We are more self-sufficient and have been able to increase our exports. We have no Italian or Swiss cheeses, but we’ve learned to make just as good Russian cheeses using Italian and Swiss recipes”, he said.

“New sanctions are nothing positive but not as bad as the West makes it sound”, he added.

Tatarintsev accused the West of not understanding the Russian mentality.

“The more the West pushes Russia, the stronger the Russian response will be,” he said.

The diplomat’s comments come as Western nations fear Moscow is preparing an invasion of Ukraine, having nearly surrounded its western neighbour with more than 100,000 troops.

Washington has warned that an all-out invasion could begin “any day”.

Tatarintsev insisted Moscow was trying to avoid a war.

“That is our political leadership’s most sincere wish. The last thing people in Russia want is war.”■

Leave Ukraine now! President Biden orders US citizens

<SUNBIGHT>~USA~Eke~11th February,2022 @ 10:55 WAT

US President Joe Biden has called on all American citizens remaining in Ukraine to leave the country immediately, citing increased threats of Russian military action.

Mr Biden said he would not send troops to rescue Americans if Moscow invades Ukraine.

He warned that “things could go crazy quickly” in the region.

Russia has repeatedly denied any plans to invade Ukraine despite massing more than 100,000 troops near the border.

But it has just begun massive military drills with neighbouring Belarus, and Ukraine has accused Russia of blocking its access to the sea.

The Kremlin says it wants to enforce “red lines” to make sure that its former Soviet neighbour does not join Nato.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Thursday that Europe faced its biggest security crisis in decades amid the tensions.

The US State Department urged Americans in Ukraine to leave immediately.

“American citizens should leave now,” Mr Biden told NBC News.

“We’re dealing with one of the largest armies in the world. It’s a very different situation and things could go crazy quickly.”

Asked whether there was a scenario that could prompt him to send troops to rescue fleeing Americans, Mr Biden replied: “There’s not. That’s a world war when Americans and Russia start shooting at one another. We’re in a very different world than we’ve ever been.”

World leaders, meanwhile, continued their frenzied diplomacy to defuse the current crisis over Ukraine.

Russia and Ukraine announced late on Thursday that they had failed to reach any breakthrough after nine hours of talks with French and German officials aimed at ending the separatist conflict in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainian envoy Andriy Yermak said while there were disagreements “there is a will to continue and there is a will to negotiate”.

The current tensions come eight years after Russia annexed Ukraine’s southern Crimea peninsula. Since then, Ukraine’s military has been locked in a war with Russian-backed rebels in eastern areas near Russia’s borders.

Earlier, the UK prime minister said he hoped “strong deterrence” and “patient diplomacy” could find a way through the crisis but the stakes were “very high”.

In a joint news conference in Brussels with Nato secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg, Mr Johnson said he did not believe Russia had yet taken a decision on whether to invade Ukraine but the UK’s intelligence “remains grim”.

UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace was due to meet Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu in Moscow on Friday, a day after a frosty encounter between Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Britain’s Liz Truss.

Mr Lavrov said relations between the UK and Russia “leave much to be desired” and are at the “lowest point over the past few years”. Ms Truss accused Russia of “Cold War rhetoric”.

Before flying to Moscow, Mr Wallace confirmed the UK was providing more defensive equipment – including body armour, helmets and combat boots – to the Ukrainian government. He also said it was important to show that Nato countries “won’t let threats push us around”.

Meanwhile, Ukraine accused Russia of blocking its access to the sea as Russia prepares for naval exercises.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said the Sea of Azov was completely blocked and the Black Sea almost fully cut off by Russian forces.

Russia’s naval exercises will take place next week in the two seas to the south of Ukraine, the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Russia has issued coastal warnings citing missile and gunnery firing exercises.

Ukraine’s foreign ministry said the “unprecedentedly vast area where the manoeuvres will be conducted makes navigation in both seas practically impossible”, and Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov tweeted that the international waters of the two seas had been blocked by Russia.

The naval exercises off Ukraine’s southern flank are in addition to the 10 days of military exercises currently under way in Belarus, to the north of Ukraine.

There are fears that if Russia tries to invade Ukraine, the exercises put the Russian military close to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, making an attack on the city easier. Russia says its troops will return to their permanent bases after the drills end.

Ukraine has launched its own 10-day military exercises, though officials have given few details.

Moscow says it cannot accept that Ukraine – a former Soviet republic with deep social and cultural ties with Russia – could one day join the Western defence alliance Nato and has demanded that this be ruled out.

Russia has been backing a bloody armed rebellion in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region since 2014. Some 14,000 people – including many civilians – have died in fighting since then.

There is some suggestion that a renewed focus on the so-called Minsk agreements – which sought to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine – could be used as a basis to defuse the current crisis.

Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany backed the accords in 2014-2015.■

18-Year Old Becomes First Black Male Valedictorian at High School in Oakland

<SUNBIGHT>~U.S.A~Eke~10th February,2022

AHMED Muhammad, an 18-year old student from Oakland, California, has made history as the first Black male to graduate as valedictorian in his school, Oakland Technical High School.

Muhammad is honored with the highest academic rank in his class with a cumulative 4.73 GPA. He is also an outstanding athlete as a member of the Bulldog’s varsity basketball team.

Aside from that, Muhammad also founded a science education company called Kits Cubed last year during the pandemic. The company creates fun and affordable science kits that elementary and middle school-age kids can enjoy doing experiments with.

“Founding Kits Cubed was the culmination of all of the valuable lessons I learned throughout high school from so many amazing people,” Muhammad told KTVU. “I’m glad we were able to create something meaningful before graduating.”

However, Muhammad said it was just the start of endless possibilities for him. He was accepted to the 11 universities he applied to, including Harvard, Princeton, UC Berkeley, Columbia University, and his “dream school” Stanford. He plans to major in engineering and computer science but has yet to make a final decision.

Muhammad, who is poised to be a first-generation college student in his family, is grateful for his parents who worked hard and served as role models to help him reach his goals. He hopes to inspire other young people to achieve success as well.

“Being named valedictorian is a dream come true,” he said. “I hope that me being class valedictorian inspires others from similar backgrounds to do the same.”■

Another Oil Spill in Nigeria Coastal Region

<SUNBIGHT>~Nigeria~Eke~10th February,2022.

AN oil spill off Nigeria’s southern coast covers an area of 780 acres (315 hectares), a senior official has told the BBC.

This is the size of more than 500 football pitches.

It follows last Wednesday’s explosion of an oil production vessel – the Trinity Spirit – that had a storage capacity of two million barrels, though it was not believed to have been storing that much. Three people died in the blast.

Idris Musa, head of Nigeria’s National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (Nosdra), told the BBC’s Newsday programme that chemical dispersants had been applied to reduce the damage to marine life in the area.

The location of the spill was not far from where the Trinity Spirit caught fire, he said.

When asked if the government body could deal with slick effectively, Mr Musa replied: “Certainly we can, certainly we can.”

However, cynics will note that many previous oil spills in Nigeria have not been cleared up.■
