“This promise is late enough and we want to ensure that it does not delay any further,” the minister stated, adding that once the beneficiaries get to the site, the keys to their houses will be handed over to them.

Some of the beneficiaries who were presented the documents at the ministry included: Austin Eguavoen; Peter Rufai; Victor Ikpeba; Sunday Oliseh; Isaac Semitoje; Col. A. Asielue (team leader); Stephen Edema and Uche Okafor (now deceased).

The Super Eagles erstwhile coach used the opportunity to apologise to Nigerians for not qualifying the team for the Mundial event in Qatar later this year.

“As you all know, I was saddled with the responsibility of qualifying Nigeria for the World Cup tournament coming up in Qatar, but it wasn’t to be. So I want to use this opportunity to apologise to the entire Nigerians,” he said.■

IRISH professional mixed martial artist, Conor McGregor, has expressed interest in the acquisition of English Premiership club Chelsea FC.

According to Forbes, the super star is currently worth €170 million, it is however not clear how McGregor hopes to raise the £3 billion price tag for Chelsea.

He announced his intention for the purchase of the London club on Wednesday via twitter.

“I wish to explore this,” McGregor said in a tweet, posting a screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation in which he was told that Chelsea will be sold for £3 billion.

McGregor made much fortune from his whiskey brand Proper Twelve, raking in €131 million last summer after divesting from the company.

UK government had proposed ban on Chelsea owner, Russian Roman Abramovich, to protest his country’s invasion of Ukraine.■

Former captain Song named new Cameroon coach

<SUNBIGHT>~Football~Afor~4th March, 2022 @ 01:02 WAT

FORMER captain Rigobert Song was named Cameroon’s new coach on Tuesday in place of Toni Conceicao just three weeks before a crucial World Cup playoff.

Song earned 137 caps for Cameroon during an international career spanning almost 17 years, competing at four World Cups and eight Africa Cup of Nations finals.

He played club football in England at Liverpool and West Ham United, and also had stints in France, Germany, Italy and Turkey. The 45-year-old has been serving as coach of Cameroon’s under-23 team.

Conceicao led Cameroon to third place at the Africa Cup of Nations finals last month but the Portuguese-born coach has been told his contract will not be renewed.

“The upcoming assignments for our national team require a new orientation and a new breath,” said Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) President Samuel Eto’o in a statement.

A separate statement from Fecafoot did not give details of Song’s term of contract but said, “Rigobert Song and his team don’t have time to pop the champagne corks as their first big challenge is in a few weeks”.

Cameroon host Algeria in Yaounde on March 25 and then play a return game in Blida on March 29 with the winner of the playoff tie qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar.■

Russia to appeal to sports court over World Cup ban

<SUNBIGHT>~Football~Afor~4th March, 2022 @00:50 WAT

The Russian football federation (RFU) said on Thursday that it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against its expulsion from the 2022 World Cup and all international competitions.

RUSSIA was due to face Poland on March 24 in a World Cup play-off. But on February 28, FIFA and UEFA banned the country from all competitions in response to the invasion of Ukraine.

In a statement in Russian, the RFU said it planned to launch a single lawsuit against the global and European governing bodies to “demand the restoration of all men’s and women’s national teams of Russia for all types of football.” It added that it planned to seek “compensation for damage.”

On Monday, FIFA and UEFA announced the expulsion of Russia from all international football. “FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice,” read a joint statement.

The RFU responded on Monday by denouncing the suspension as “discriminatory”. The RFU statement complained that they had been unfairly treated, saying it believed “FIFA and UEFA did not have a legal basis when deciding on the suspension of Russian teams. It violated the fundamental rights of the RFU as a member of FIFA and UEFA, including the right to take part in competitions.”

“The Russian Football Union was also not granted the right to present its position, which violated the fundamental right to defence.” It said “FIFA and UEFA did not take into account other possible options”. The RFU said it “will insist on an accelerated procedure for considering the case.”

Russia were scheduled to play Poland in a qualifying play-off semi-final on March 24, and might have faced Sweden or the Czech Republic on March 29 for a place in the World Cup finals in Qatar later this year.

FIFA originally announced that Russian teams would be allowed to continue under the name of the Football Union of Russia, playing home games on neutral territory and behind closed doors, and with the Russian flag and anthem banned.

Those measures were dismissed as “totally unacceptable” by Polish FA president Cezary Kulesza, who added that Poland would not play against Russia, “no matter what the name of the team is.”

The Swedes and Czechs also said they would not face the Russian team. The RFU questioned their motives. “The decision to withdraw the national team from qualification for the 2022 World Cup was made under pressure from direct rivals in the play-offs, which violated the sporting principle and the rules of fair play.”

Russia were supposed to play the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland in their group at the women’s European championships in England in July.■
